Notes Provided by Adele's Caregiver

She is fearful of strangers whether male or female but is much better with females overall.  She is listed as an "escape artist" who tries to run away because she is fearful. Cathy, her foster mom says, "anyone who is interested in adopting Adele, needs to know that she is very good at getting out of harnesses so it has to be a securely fitted one." Also, she must have a harness -  no collars for this gal!  Her vet found that she has a thickening of her Pharnyx which  he believes is from an old injury and should not cause her any problems but does recommend that she not be collared around the neck for leash walking.

Her foster family has been working with a trainer for a few weeks now with some success but it is a very slow progress. After eight weeks, she has warmed up to her foster mom,  but she is still very fearful of her foster dad. In fact, Cathy says, "My husband still can’t approach her without her running or trying to hide.  Sometimes if she is outside and she hears him inside I have a hard time getting her in. She is very noise sensitive."

Adele has participated in several Reiki sessions to help address her fears. The Reiki practitioner can not get near her - so no touching. The opinion of the trainer is that she is probably too old at this point to expect any significant changes in her behavior but it would probably be best if she were in a female only home where she would be able to feel more comfortable and perhaps be able to relax enough to lose some of her fears. Cathy added, "I do notice when my husband is gone for a while she relaxes more and will move around more freely."

Her foster family utilizes several methods to work with her fears, most based on advice from the trainer. Adele's vet prescribed her Prozac, which will need to be continued. Also, she is getting Composure twice a day and using a DAP plug-in that emits a pheromone that is supposed to help with anxiety in dogs. Her foster parents play CD's called “Through a Dog’s Ear” (trainer recommended) and have a Thundershirt.  [All of these things were recommended by the trainer.]

PLEASE NOTE: Her foster family wants to adopt her, but seeing how fearful she still is of her foster dad, Randy,  after eight weeks, medicinal support and behavior therapy, her foster family would like to see if anyone can provide her with "a more perfect fit" -ie. a home with only females, possibly a well-balanced dog, without cats or children. IF THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOU - Please contact us about this very special girl.

Please contact her caregiver, Cathy, for more detailed information.
