Scooter's Caregiver reported: " I was told Scooter was trained as a service dog for an elderly person and somehow ended up dumped at a shelter. It is unknown if the elderly person died or if his services were no longer required. He has severe separation anxiety and is currently on medication. He does not tear up anything but he cries/barks until he almost loses his voice and he shakes and pants. Very distraught. It is difficult to get him to calm down. I tried a new technique of not speaking to him when I first come home. I come in put down my stuff. I don't make eye contact but I do ask if he needs to go out. I walk out to the sunroom and open the sliding door. Then I walk out with him. After he is outside for a bit he settles down some but it is a process." "He would do best in a home where the person he bonds with is home a lot and is able to take Scooter with them when they leave. Also, he is 5 years old and full of energy. He has a great hound nose and has a tendency to try to bolt out the door in search of something to chase. He barks at people when he first sees them but makes friends quickly. I was told he didn't get along with other dogs but I took him on a play date with a friend's boxer and he did great. The two even drank out of the same water bowl. It might just be that he needs to be socialized more. Also, he hates being crated! It makes him even more anxious."
